The Waves

Artist | Ethan Park

Media | Oil on canvas

Location | SIGNIEL BUSAN Lobby

Description of the Work

If you take a moment to look beyond the windows of the lobby to the ocean, you will find that its appearance takes a variety of forms. Upon a casual glance, you find only a tranquil surface on which the sunlight glitters; but when you keep looking from up close, you will find yourself swayed by the turbulent movement and rhythm of the waves. In Ethan Park’s work, the waves roar and froth, at times allowing glimpses into the depths underneath, while in constant motion. This is probably how the artist perceives the sea to be. The constantly changing aspects that Park manages to capture, unbound by any particular approach, renders each work representative of a particular moment of life. In addition to the magnificent echoing of the monochromatic colors that dominate the entire canvas, the beautiful harmony achieved by subtle iterations in color blends with the geographical characteristics of SIGNIEL BUSAN, which is situated on Haeundae Beach, imparting a special ambience.

About the Artist

Bak Chan-Guk is an artist who, instead of keeping back the overflowing emotions from the depths of his heart, transfers them directly onto the canvas. He endeavors to understand the fundamental significance of movement at an abstract level, grappling with the theme of “being alive.” His work expresses the multitude of movements and the resulting conflict with fragmentary materials generated by the speed and friction of movement, and renders the movement and connectivity in visible form. He uses raw elements such as charcoal, shell powder or marble powder to approximate the original production methods established throughout the history of art, and lets them loose on the canvas where there are no limits to expression. Uninhibited by either material or style, the artist grapples with unnamed emotions and their memories through a roughly rendered landscape. His paintings seem to echo the violent sentiments that sometimes come over us, with their maelstrom of emotion. His works are held in the collections of KT, BC Card, LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL, and the Sofitel Ambassador Seoul, among others.
