  • Description of the Work

A large chandelier made from yellow beads can be seen while going up the spiral staircase on the 9th floor lobby that leads to the 10th floor of L7 GANGNAM. However, it is not an actual chandelier. It is an installation by artist Bakh Seon-ghi, made from thousands of acrylic beads. Although it is not fitted with lighting, the light that enters through the windows during the day and the lights that come on at night in the hotel reflect off thousands of glistening beads to create a dazzling space. The piece makes use of yellow, the signature color of L7 GANGNAM, allowing it to blend in with other yellow objects placed throughout the hotel and making it one of the most prominent works in L7 GANGNAM.. Depending on the angle and direction from which it is viewed, the work takes on many forms that stimulate the visual imagination of its viewers, such as the refraction of light upon hitting a surface, or drops falling in a stream of water.

  • About the Artist

An installation artist and a pioneer of Asian contemporary art, Bahk Seon-Ghi is currently one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Korea. His work takes many forms, from installations featuring materials such as charcoal, stone, or acrylic beads hung from invisible wires, to sculptures that make use of painting techniques and perspective.

He earned recognition first in Europe, including Italy, when he was invited as a student to special Arsenale exhibitions in Venice. In 2005, he was named “Artist of the Year” by the Kim Chong Yung Museum, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a Korean sculptor. In 2006, he received the Kim Chong Yung Sculpture Award, garnering even more attention. An artist who has consistently ruminated on the themes of past and present, reality and illusion, and how they relate to one another, through his hanging installations that express both Eastern and Western sensibilities, Bahk continues to present his work internationally in critically acclaimed collections
