Description of the Work
10 works of white porcelain capturing Eastern beauty are showcased in eye-catching illuminated vitrines lining both sides of the hallway leading into Toh Lim The Canton Table Chinese restaurant at LOTTE HOTEL WORLD, newly renovated in January 2023. Commissioned on the occasion of the reopening, artist Kim Ae-young’s Blue Dream achieves harmony with the jade-toned interior as a white porcelain piece created in the concept of paradise and divided into three or four components in accordance with a pivot, between which blue and gold enamel is added for a pure aesthetic. Steadily gazing between the inner surfaces of the ceramic pieces of the work seems to reveal an intriguing story on each side. A pair of butterflies fluttering through undulating mountains, a deer walking through the woods under a full moon, a plum blossom gently blooming through the rain, and a crane soaring through the clouds: these are some expressions of the artist’s imagined Eastern utopia through the Media of porcelain. The understated painting on the barely-visible inner surface of the ceramic piece brings joy, as if the viewer has discovered an unseen world hidden in the clouds.

About the Artist
Kim Ae-young studied ceramics and glass at Hongik University, where she obtained her master’s degree in ceramics. She captures various stories of hidden human desires and the absurdity of society. This is expressed by works of contemporary landscapes that blend traditional ceramics with modern images, which are illustrated on the cross-sections of ceramics taken apart by the artist. At age 26, she won the Gold Prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, starting down the path of a fully-fledged ceramic artist and hoping to become an authentic artist in pursuit of the essential. Her quintessential Pivot Series demonstrate that works of ceramics separated into three or four components can be continuously combined into a new piece in accordance with a pivot, illustrating the various possibilities of change. She has been awarded the Gold Prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, specially selected at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, invited be an artist-in-residence at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, and selected for the New Wave Zone of the Coex Craft Trend Fair.
